MG Motor Reveals Its New ADAPT Platform For EVs and Hybrids

JSW MG Motor India has revealed its new platform for electric and hybrid vehicles, called ADAPT (Advanced Drive Architecture Platform Technology). Here’s everything you need to know about it: –

New MG ADAPT Platform

  • As mentioned above, ADAPT is an acronym for Advanced Drive Architecture Platform Technology.
  • This new energy vehicle platform supports plug-in-hybrid (PHEV), self-charging strong-hybrid, range-extended hybrid and electric models.
  • The first model on this platform is expected to be revealed in the coming months and is likely to be a plug-in hybrid model based on the Wuling Starlight 560 sold in international markets. It is expected to be called the “Hector Hawk“.
  • According to the brand, the hybrid offerings based on ADAPT will feature a naturally aspirated petrol engine that will boast lower fuel consumption and a thermal efficiency of up to 43%, which is significantly higher than that of conventional petrol engines.
  • Hybrid models based on this platform will be paired with a direct hybrid transmission (DHT), featuring an electromagnetic clutch (e-clutch), for instant response and high fuel efficiency.
  • They will also feature a 10-in-1 drive unit combining a PMS Motor (permanent magnet synchronous motor) and a 2-stage reduction gearbox for efficient power delivery.
  • Depending on the hybrid type, models based on the ADAPT platform will support the following self-adapting driving modes: Pure EV, Series Hybrid, Parallel Hybrid and Direct Drive.

MG Hector Hawk – First Model On ADAPT

The first model to be underpinned by Advanced Drive Architecture Platform Technology (ADAPT) could be a rebadged version of the Wuling Starlight 560, a 7-seater SUV available in both electric and plug-in-hybrid versions in international markets. While it is not official, MG is expected to launch its electric version first, followed by its PHEV version.

For reference, its global-spec PHEV version utilises a 1.5-litre petrol engine (105PS/130Nm), paired with a front electric motor and a 20.5kWh battery pack, producing a combined output of 197PS and 230Nm. It offers 125km of pure electric range, while the WLTP combined range is rated at 1100km with its 52-litre fuel tank.

On the contrary, its electric iteration comes equipped with a 56.7kWh battery and a front-mounted motor producing 136PS/200Nm and claims up to 500km of range.
