Maruti Suzuki WagonR Based EV Spied With Toyota Badge

Maruti Suzuki has been testing WagonR-based EV for quite some time now. The spy shots have also confirmed that it will be based on WagonR's upcoming premium version, XL5. However, reports are there that the Indo-Japanese brand has dropped this plan due to the high prices associated with electric vehicles and low sales volume compared to the ICE models. But we have now got our hands on a couple of shots that validate the possibility of Maruti’s entry-level EV, albeit under the Toyota banner.

2021 Toyota Wagon R First Look | On Testing | Launch And Features ?

The testing mule wasn't wearing any camouflage, giving us a clear view of its exterior design. It had a lot in common with the WagonR. However, it was featuring a split headlamp set up with large circular headlamps placed lower on the bumper and top-mounted DRLs & turn indicators around the sleek grille.

Maruti XL5 EV

The rear featured vertically stacked taillamps similar to the Wagon R. However, the rear bumper design was slightly different, featuring prominent black cladding for a sturdy appearance. The 15-inch alloy wheels borrowed from the Ignis can also be clearly seen in the shots, but with the Toyota emblem.

The earlier spy shots have also confirmed that this upcoming EV will also get braking regeneration technology, dual-tone interior, 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system, and auto climate control, etc. While the technical information of the EV is yet to be revealed, it is expected to be based on Suzuki's Heartect platform and could offer a range of around 200km.

Besides the XL5-based electric vehicle, Toyota is also gearing up to launch the Maruti Ciaz-based sedan, which is likely to be called Toyota Belta. It will replace the Yaris sedan in Toyota's Indian product portfolio. The Japanese automaker will also introduce the re-badged version of the Maruti Ertiga MPV.
