Maruti Suzuki Is Gearing Up To Launch Mahindra Thar Rival

Suzuki Jimny had created a lot of buzzes when it was first showcased at the Auto Expo 2020 and then some rummers spread that the brand will launch a five-door version of Jimny, especially for the Indian market. Now, it has been spied testing in the country, seems like Maruti is all set to turn the rummers into reality. However, the testing mule was a three-door version.

The Jimny spied was not camo covered. It was the Sierra variant, painted in white color.

About Suzuki Jimny

The Suzuki Jimny is currently in its fourth-generation avatar, debuted in July 2018 in the global market. It is a body-on-frame compact off-roader vehicle with a curb weight of around 1000kg only. It features a boxy stance with elements like heavy bottom cladding, round headlamps, huge glass areas, tailgate-mounted spare wheel, bumper-mounted taillamps, and high ground clearance, which makes it look like a tiny version of the Mercedes-Benz G Wagon.

Inside, it gets an all-black retro-modern dashboard layout. Though it is an off-roader, still it packs a decent set of comfort features such as LED headlamps, a 7-inch Smartplay system with built-in navigation, Apple CarPlay & Android Auto connectivity support, cruise control, power windows, automatic AC, keyless entry with engine start/stop button, etc. On the safety front, its global version comes equipped with 6-airbags, ABS with EBD, traction control, brake assist (BA), ESP (electronic stability program), hill descent control, hill hold control, seatbelts with pre-tensioners, autonomous emergency braking, and lane departure warning.

Underneath its bonnet, it gets a 1.5-liter K15B 4-cylinder petrol engine that churns out 105PS of power and 138Nm of torque. It is the same motor that also powers many other Maruti offerings such as facelifted Vitara Brezza, Ciaz, Ertiga, XL6, and the S-Cross. It comes with a limited-slip differential and shift-on-fly 4×4 drivetrain with a low-range option to switch between 2WD-high, 4WD-high, and a 4WD low.

When it will launch in India?

The model on display at the Auto Expo 2020 was the 3-door version of Jimny Sierra trim, the same variant was spied near the Manesar area. As per the reports, Maruti will launch its extended-wheelbase version (5-door) in the Indian market. In fact, the Maruti Gypsy was also a longer wheelbase version of the 2nd generation Jimny. We believe the brand could also introduce its 3-door version just like the newly launched Mahindra Thar. Even the brand might continue to use the 'Gypsy' nomenclature for the Indian market.

Maruti Suzuki Jimny could make its way to our shore by the next year and would likely be retailed from Nexa premium dealerships. Its prices could start from around Rs 10 lakh. Once launched, it will take on the likes of all-new Mahindra Thar and the upcoming Force Gurkha.
