Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara AllGrip Select AWD Tech Explained

Maruti Suzuki has finally stepped into the mid-size SUV space with the all-new Grand Vitara, featuring Suzuki’s global all-wheel drive (AWD) system, the ‘AllGrip’, in India for the first time. Though the SUV gets two engine options: a 103PS mild hybrid and a 116PS self-charging strong hybrid, the AllGrip technology comes mated to the former motor only. It electronically controls the drive system so the motorist can experience different driving styles depending on the road surfaces or conditions. Interested in learning more about this tech? Here you go.

Suzuki All Grip – Introduction

Globally, Suzuki offers three versions of All Grip: AllGrip Auto, AllGrip Select, and AllGrip Pro.

AllGrip Auto

The AllGrip Auto is reserved for the Swift and Ignis sold in select overseas markets. It features a viscous coupling-based part-time four-wheel drive system that automatically distributes torque to the rear wheels when it detects the front wheel losing grip of the road. Suzuki Ignis with AllGrip also features a Grip Control System that reduces engine torque loss during getaway via traction control by braking the slipping wheels while applying drive power to the opposite wheels

AllGrip Select

AllGrip Select, on the other hand, is what Maruti Suzuki is offering in the new Grand Vitara SUV. It is a full-time all-wheel-drive system (AWD) with four driving modes – AUTO, SPORT, SNOW, and LOCK, which can be selected with the help of a simple push-and-turn dial located at the center console tunnel. They enable you to experience different styles of driving for different terrains.

Using a feedback control module, it predicts slippage based on the road surface, throttle opening position, steering angle, and other variables, and distributes torque to the rear wheels accordingly. And as mentioned above, the AllGrip Select lets you choose from four driving modes: –

  1. Auto Mode: – To maximize fuel efficiency, the SUV in Auto mode operates most of the time in front-wheel drive and automatically switches to all-wheel drive when required. With this, it is claimed to deliver a fuel economy (mileage) of up to 19.38 kmpl.
  2. Snow Mode: – To maintain stability and prevent slippage, this mode automatically engages the all-wheel-drive system. Further, the ESP (electronic stability program) helps to suppress the spin.
  3. Sport Mode: – Sport mode engages AWD while cornering and accelerating, thus, making it ideal for a sporty driving experience.
  4. Lock Mode: – This mode is ideal when the SUV requires hard maximum extrication ability, especially on rough, muddy, or other slippery surfaces.
