Mahindra Discontinues Thar Convertible Variants In India

After rejigging the variant lineup of the XUV700, Mahindra has now discontinued the convertible-top variants of the Thar SUV in India. These soft-top versions, known for offering an open-air driving experience, are no longer listed on the brand’s official website.

For those unaware, the second-gen Mahindra Thar, which was launched in 2020, was originally available in three body styles, namely soft-top, hard-top and convertible. The soft-top variants were axed in 2021 over safety issues, and now the convertible-style trims have also been removed from sales. While official comments are yet to come, we believe this decision seems to be part of Mahindra’s plan to simplify the Thar lineup as more buyers now prefer the practical Thar Roxx. It also helps free up production capacity to focus on the Roxx variants. That said, customers still looking for an open-top off-roader in the Thar lineup will now have to explore used car options.

As per the current information, the Mahindra Thar remains mechanically and feature-wise unchanged, apart from the recent variant reshuffle. It continues to be offered with three engine options: 1.5-litre diesel (118PS/300Nm), 2.2-litre diesel (131PS/300Nm), and 2-litre turbo-petrol (152P/300Nm). While the 1.5-litre mill only gets a manual gearbox and rear-wheel-drive system, the other engine options get both manual and automatic transmission options, along with 4WD system.

Regarding features, it retains amenities like a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, coloured MID, 6-speaker sound system, manual AC, cruise control, steering-mounted controls, dual-front airbags, tyre pressure monitoring system, ESC, ISOFIX anchors, hill descent and much more. Features like six airbags, ADAS and a 360-degree camera are still missing.

Mahindra currently retails the Thar 3-door between Rs 11.50 lakh and Rs 17.60 lakh (ex-showroom), placing it against the Maruti Jimny and Force Gurkha.
