Maruti Suzuki showcased the small adventure Jimny off-roader at the 2020 Auto Expo and since then there was speculation that the carmaker would bring an extended wheelbase version of the SUV to the Indian market. And now finally a long-wheelbase version of the Gypsy-successor has been spied testing in Europe for the first time. This could be the same model that will be launched in our market.
Though predictions were that the Jimny would come to India in a 5-door layout instead of the 3-door version sold globally, perhaps the success of second-gen Mahindra Thar has influenced the Japanese manufacturer to offer Jimny in the 3-door variant. However, there is also a possibility that the brand is just testing the longer wheelbase Jimny with three-door bodyworks and the final-spec model coming to India will be offered with two extra doors for the second row. According to some international media reports, Suzuki could also offer a pick-up variant of the LWB Jimny in select markets.
Though the model was heavily camouflaged, there are no distinctive styling elements have been spotted except for the elongated wheelbase and rear glass panel. The spy shots suggest that the LWD Jimny will measure around 4 meters in length.
In the Indian market, the fourth-gen Jimny could retain the iconic Gypsy badge. It is likely to be powered by a 1.5-liter K15B petrol engine (105PS/130Nm) that also powers the sub-4m Vitara Brezza and the Jimny available overseas. It is likely to get a 4×4 drivetrain with the low-range transfer case. It could also be offered with a BS6-compliant 1.5-liter diesel engine, which is speculated to be offered soon in the Ertiga MPV.
While there is no specific timeline for Jimny's launch, we expect it to arrive by the next year. Here it would likely be priced around Rs 10 lakh (ex-showroom) and rival with the Mahindra Thar and the upcoming BS6 Force Gurkha.
