Is This The 7-Seater Kia Utility Vehicles That We’ve Been Waiting For?

Kia Motors is gearing up to launch a new 7-seater multipurpose utility vehicle (codenamed Kia KY) in selected markets including India. Recently, it has been spied testing overseas, suggesting that it is a three-row version of the Sonet subcompact SUV, albeit in an MPV avatar. If reports are to be believed, Kia is going to unveil it on April 8, 2021.

2021 Kia MPV – What do the spy shots reveal?

While the spied model was heavily camouflaged, we can clearly see its wraparound headlamps with LED DRLs positioned above, which look similar to the ones seen on the Sonet. The slightly visible LED elements of the taillamp also look similar to the Sonet. Though it is likely to share its underpinnings (Hyundai-Kia K2 platform) with the Sonet SUV, its overall silhouette proves that the vehicle will be a proper three-row MPV. It is expected to be around 4.5m long (approximately 500mm longer than the Sonet).

For the people not in know, the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, and the upcoming Hyundai Alcazar are also based on the Hyundai-Kia K2 platform. While this platform is compatible enough to accommodate a long wheelbase, still it will be interesting to see how the Korean Maker will manage to take out space from the Sonet's compact cabin.

Expected powertrain

The upcoming Kia MPV is likely to be available with two engine options – 1.5-liter petrol (115PS/144Nm) and 1.5-liter diesel (115PS/250Nm). Both motors are expected to get a 6-speed manual transmission as standard along with a CVT automatic option for petrol and a torque converter unit for the diesel mill.

Kia Sonet 7-seater – When will it be launched?

As mentioned above, Kia is likely to unveil this Sonet based MPV on 8th April 2021. It will be manufactured in India for both domestic as well as international markets. However, it is expected to go on sale in Indonesia first. Though there is no official statement about 7-seater Sonet coming to the Indian market, we expect it to be launched here sometime later this year. In the Indian market, it will rival the likes of Mahindra Marazzo and Maruti XL6.
