Hyundai Showcased Ioniq 5 Electric Crossover And NEXO FCEV In India

Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) has showcased the Ioniq 5 electric crossover and the NEXO fuel-cell electric vehicle (FCEV) at the inauguration of its new headquarter in Gurgaon. Besides, the brand has also displayed the Genesis G80 sedan and GV80 SUV.

Hyundai Nexon FCEV

For those who aren't aware, the Nexo FCEV was also showcased at the 2020 Auto Expo. In fact, the brand has already registered the vehicle in our country for testing purposes. It could be India's first hydrogen-powered fuel-cell electric vehicle (FCEV).

It is powered by a Permanent Magnet Synchronous type electric motor (163PS/395Nm) that draws its charge from a hydrogen fuel cell that generates electricity by mixing oxygen with compressed hydrogen to create a flow of electrons. The only emission that comes out of the Nexo is H2O (water). It is not only more environmentally friendly than EVs but also offers better convenience as the Hydrogen fuel cells just take five minutes to fill, as opposed to electric vehicles which take at least an hour for a decent range and can drive more than 600Km before needing to be filled up again. The Hyundai Nexo has a 156.6-liter hydrogen tank. The crossover is claimed to sprint from 0-100kmph in 9.2 seconds.

Hyundai Ioniq 5

Ioniq 5 is the first model under Hyundai's new 'Ioniq' electric sub-brand and is based on the brand's all-new BEV architecture called Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP). It comes with two battery pack choices – 58kWh and 72.6kWh, available with either a rear-wheel or an all-wheel drivetrain.

The rear-wheel-drive model gets a single motor for the rear axle, whereas the AWD trim gets two motors placed on each axle. The larger battery pack with an AWD setup generates 306PS and 605Nm. It is claimed to achieve 0-100kmph in just 5.2 seconds before reaching the top speed of 185kmph. With its 2WD model, Hyundai claims a WLTP-tested range of around 470-480kms.

The Ioniq 5 also supports DC fast charging of up to 220kW, which can reionize the battery up to 70% in merely 18 minutes. It also supports both 400V and 800V charging technology as well as the ''Vehicle to Load (V2L)" tech, which allows it to act as a 3.6kW charger for other electric vehicles or devices.

Hyundai is yet to make any comments regarding its India launch.

Genesis G80 and GV80

Genesis is the luxury vehicle division of the Hyundai Motor Group. And the G80 is its mid-range luxury sedan that competes with the Mercedes-Benz E-Class and BMW 5 Series in the international market. Globally, the brand offers the sedan with three engine options – a 2.5-litre 4-cylinder turbocharged petrol, a 3.5-litre twin-turbo V6 petrol, and a 2.2-litre diesel engine. All three mills come mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission as standard.

The GV80, on the other hand, is the first Genesis SUV, which is based on the same platform as the G80 sedan. It also comes with three engine options – a 2.5-litre 4-cylinder turbo-petrol, a 3.5-litre turbo V6 petrol, and a 3.0-litre 6-cylinder turbo-diesel engine. It takes on the likes of Mercedes-Benz GLE and BMW X5.
