Toyota Land Cruiser, Lexus LX Recalled In India Over Gearbox Software Fault

Toyota and Lexus India have issued a recall for the Land Cruiser and Lexus LX due to a potential software issue with the gearbox system of these SUVs. Over 969 units of the Land Cruiser and 117 units of the LX SUVs, manufactured between September 2024 and September 2025, are affected by this recall. Brand states that this proactive recall campaign aims to reprogram the Transmission Control Computer software, which controls the transmission performance.

Reason Behind The Recall

The Toyota Land Cruiser and Lexus LX share the same platform and even powertrain in markets like India. They are powered by a twin-turbocharged V6 diesel engine, paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission. This gearbox uses electronic components called solenoids to manage gear shifts smoothly. However, if one of these solenoids fails, the gearbox may not shift properly and could rev higher than normal in certain gears. This happens because the transmission’s control system may fail to alert the engine’s computer about the issue. As a result, power delivery to the wheels can drop, especially at higher speeds, and the transmission itself could get damaged.

In rare cases, the fault may also cause transmission fluid to leak onto hot exhaust components, which could increase the risk of fire.

What’s Next?

The authorised service centres of Toyota and Lexus will contact affected owners to bring in their vehicles for inspection and reprogram the electronic modules controlling the transmission at no extra cost. In the meantime, customers can also contact their nearest service centre to schedule an appointment.

Should You Continue Driving The Recalled Models?

Toyota has yet to specify whether the recalled models will be completely safe to be driven in their current condition. However, the brand has clarified that no cases have been reported so far in India. We advise owners of the affected vehicles to stay alert to unusual situations like engine revving, delayed gear shifts or sudden power loss, and get the vehicles checked to prevent potential damage or safety risks.
