Hyundai Group Introduced A New EV-Dedicated Platform Called E-GMP

Hyundai Group has introduced a new platform, specially dedicated to its new generation electric vehicles, called "E-GMP (Electric-Global Modular Platform)". Hyundai & Kia Motors, both brands will use this platform to underpins their upcoming long-range BEVs (Battery Electric Vehicles). The Hyundai IONIQ 5 will be the first product to be underpinned by the E-GMP, which is likely to be launched by the next year. Here are some interesting things that you would like to know about this new platform:-

  • E-GMP platform can be used across various segments such as sedans & SUVs. It can also underpin high-performance models. 
  • It provides a five-link rear suspension system and integrated drive axle, which helps to increase the ride quality.
  • On this platform, the battery pack is situated between the front and rear axles, inside the floor, which enables to use of this platform for various seating arrangements. Further, it also offers better cabin space.
  • This type of battery position also aids in better weight distribution and a low centre of gravity. 
  • The battery pack also gets a separate cooling block construction and a support structure made of ultra-high-strength steel.

  • Electric vehicles based on this platform will offer a maximum WLTP range of 500km on a full charge.
  • The E-GMP based EVs will essentially be rear-wheel driven. It also supports a 4WD configuration with minimum loss of efficiency.
  • According to the Hyundai Group, the high-performance cars based on this platform would be able to sprint from 0 to 100kph in less than 3.5 seconds, with a top speed of 260kmph.

  • BEVs (Battery Electric Vehicles) based on this platform, will offer a fast-charging capability of up to 800V 350kW. Using this, it can be charged up to 80% in just 18 minutes.
  • With the help of a new Integrated Charging Control Unit (ICCU), it also supports a bi-directional charging function or vehicle-to-load (V2L) function that will allow charging any other external device/vehicle using the E-GMP based EV's battery. This can supply 3.5kw of power.
  • This new platform will be used in 23 upcoming Hyundai electric vehicles, including IONIQ 6 and IONIQ 7. Its sibling company, Kia Motors will also use this architecture in its next 7 dedicated battery electric vehicles (BEVs) from various segments, arriving by 2027.
