In a big relief for automobile collectors and enthusiasts, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry has relaxed import rules for vintage and classic cars, allowing vehicles aged 50 years or older to be imported. Having said that, enthusiasts can now import cars to our shores manufactured up to the year 1975, making it easier to bring iconic automobiles into the country. Earlier, only pre-1950 models were eligible.
What’s more interesting is that no special license is required to import such vehicles, making the process much simpler for those who want to bring time-honoured marvels. However, reselling these vehicles within India is strictly prohibited.
Until now, car lovers in India had to struggle to find vintage classics in the limited local market or use complicated loopholes to bring them in. But now, direct imports from global auction houses, international dealerships, and private collectors are officially allowed, making it much easier to own a piece of automotive history.
This move will also boost India’s car restoration industry. Workshops specializing in engine repairs, upholstery work, and classic car detailing will see more business, creating new opportunities for skilled craftsmen. With more vintage cars on the road, events like auto shows, vintage rallies, and classic car drives will likely become bigger and more exciting. Imagine the stunning scenes at Mumbai’s Horniman Circle Garden!
Although imports are now permitted, owners must still comply with:-
✔ The Motor Vehicles Act, 1988
✔ The Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989
These rules mainly focus on roadworthiness and emissions, but since these cars are historical, some exceptions may apply. One major factor to consider is import duty, which is expected to be around 250% of the car’s traded value—a hefty price tag, but for true collectors, owning a rare classic is worth it!
