Diesel Cars May Also Run On Ethanol Blend Too – Here’s What It Means

After pushing ethanol blending in petrol, the government is now exploring a similar move for diesel as well. Speaking at the unveil event of the Maruti Suzuki WagonR Flex Fuel, Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari said the government is considering allowing up to 15% isobutanol blending, a type of alcohol-based fuel, in diesel as part of its broader alternative-fuel programme to reduce emissions and dependence on fossil fuels.

While still in the early stages, this development could mark the next big shift in India’s fuel strategy, especially for diesel-powered vehicles that form a significant part of the country’s transport ecosystem.

According to reports, it could be used in existing diesel engines with slight modifications, although further testing and regulatory approvals are still required to assess its impact on engine performance, fuel efficiency and long-term durability. Unlike ethanol, isobutanol is said to be more compatible with diesel engines as it has more energy density than ethanol and is less corrosive, making it a promising alternative.

Diesel-Isobutanol Blending – What Does It Mean For Buyers?

For buyers, this move essentially means that diesel cars can become somewhat cleaner without requiring significant changes to daily usage habits. If the government approves a blend containing up to 15% isobutanol, it could resolve the uncertainty surrounding the future of diesel cars and help reduce pollution; however, buyers should keep an eye on manufacturer approvals, especially if they intend to own the vehicle for the long term, as engine compatibility and durability with blended diesel will be crucial factors.
