Delhi Govt To Fine Rs 10,000 For Using Old Diesel And Petrol Vehicles

The transport department of Delhi government has announced that owners of 10+ years old diesel or 15+ years old petrol vehicles will be fined Rs 10,000 if found using their 'end of the life' vehicles on the road. And as per the latest Supreme Court order, the authorities can also seize such vehicles and scrap them. This step has been taken to curb the problem of vehicular pollution in the national capital and to encourage the owners of old vehicles for voluntary vehicle scrapping.

An estimated 3.5 lakh vehicles plying in Delhi are due for scrapping. However, only 2,879 old vehicles have been scrapped till 31st May 2021. The transport department has issued a public notice to inform the owners of delisted vehicles to get their old vehicles scrapped by any of the five authorized scrapping centers available in Delhi.

Apart from this, India's Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had also announced a vehicle scrappage policy for 20-year-old private vehicles and 15-year-old commercial vehicles in her 2021 budget session, under which such vehicles must undergo a fitness test through government-certified fitness centers. However, that policy will not be applicable in Delhi as there are already stringent rules in place. However, such vehicles can be re-registered in other states after obtaining a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the transport department of the Delhi govt.
