Ather Updates Battery Capacity For 450 & Rizta; Introduces New Battery Chemistry

Ather Energy has made some subtle yet important changes to the battery capacity of both the 450 and Rizta electric scooters, enhancing their overall efficiency and performance. The EV maker has also introduced a new battery chemistry on the Rizta.

  • Starting with the Ather Rizta, it used to come with 2.9kWh and 3.7kWh NMC (Nickel Manganese Cobalt) battery packs. Now, the battery capacities have been reduced to 2.7kWh and 3.5kWh, respectively.
  • The smaller battery now also uses an LFP (Lithium Ferrous Phosphate) chemistry instead of the earlier NMC (Nickel Manganese Cobalt).
  • The LFP chemistry offers better thermal stability, longer lifespan and better cost efficiency, albeit with slightly lower energy density than an equivalent NMC unit. Despite that, the IDC claimed range of 123km for the smaller pack remains the same.
  • The battery chemistry for the bigger battery pack remains unchanged. However, its claimed range has been increased from 159km to 161k on a single charge.
  • Ather will also continue to use 2.9kWh NMC cells on the Rizta as well, meaning some scooters will come with LFP packs while others will use NMC, depending on supply, with no option for customers to choose between the two.
  • It is also important to note that despite altering the battery capacity and chemistry, the performance, charging time and most importantly, the battery warranty remain the same across all Ather scooters, regardless of their size and chemistry.

Ather 450X with cruise control
  • Speaking of the Ather’s 450 range, the battery capacity on these models has dropped from 3.7kWh to 3.5kWh in their higher variants; however, no changes have been made to their battery chemistry. Being sportier in nature, they continue to use NMC batteries because their powerful motor requires higher power outputs from the battery to deliver excellent performance.
  • Despite a drop in battery size, the IDC range stays unchanged at 161km.
  • On the other hand, the lower-spec variants continue to get a 2.9kWh battery, with an unchanged claimed range of 126km (450X) and 122km (450S).
Ather Rizta battery
  • Ather has also introduced a new & more powerful 900W portable charger for both the Rizta and the 450 range of scooters, replacing the earlier 700W unit. It now takes roughly 3 hrs 12 mins for the 0 to 80%, a significant reduction from the earlier 4 hrs 30 mins charging time.
  • Ather hasn’t made any changes to their prices.
