Ather 450 Electric Scooter Discontinued In Chennai And Bengaluru

Bengaluru-based electric two-wheeler manufacturer, Ather Energy has discontinued its first pure electric scooter, the Ather 450 in Bengaluru and Chennai. It will be replaced by two new improved products: Ather 450 Plus & 450X.

For the readers not in know, the Ather 450 was first launched in Bengaluru in September 2018. It was powered by a 2.4 kWh lithium-ion battery pack, coupled to a 5.4 kW BLDC electric motor. Its top speed was 80 kmph. 

Commenting on the move, Tarun Mehta, Co-founder, and CEO of Ather Energy said: – 

“Our maiden model, Ather 450, was the outcome of four years of continuous work on R&D, design, prototype building and testing, and improving the product to make it production worthy. The learnings from Ather 450, in terms of design, specifications and production, along with feedback from the owners, has helped shape the Ather 450X and Ather 450 Plus. We are now looking forward to delivering our new product line across all cities. We would also like to express our gratitude to our valued owners, suppliers and partners for being a part of Ather Energy’s journey.”

About Ather 450X and Ather 450 Plus

The Ather 450X and 450 Plus can be considered as upgraded versions of Ather 450. Both these scooters are based on the same award-winning design philosophy. The Ather 450X pure electric scooter is powered with a 6kW PMSM motor, delivering a peak torque of 26Nm. It draws its power from the 2.9kWH lithium-ion battery, which consists of 21700 cells. It delivers a range of 85kmph per charge.

The Ather 450X can make 0-40kmph in just 3.3 seconds (in wrap mode), making it the fastest electric scooter of its segment.

On the features front, the Ather 450X comes equipped with a 7-inch touchscreen android based instrument cluster, having Snapdragon 212 Quadcore processor, 1GB RAM, and 8GB internal storage. It also gets Bluetooth connectivity and onboard navigation. The display also supports over-the-air updates (OTA). The other notable features include multiple riding modes (Wrap, Sport, Ride & ECO), auto indicator off, guide-me-home lights, connected Mobile App, side stand sensors, live location tracking, riding states, theft/tow detection, music/call control, welcome lights, and tyre pressure monitoring system, etc.

The Ather 450 Plus, on the other hand, gives a riding range of 70km and a maximum output of 5.4kW/22Nm. The features list of 450Plus is largely the same as the 450X, except for the Bluetooth connectivity and music/call control function.

Availability of Ather scooters

Apart from Bengaluru & Chennai, Ather Energy is concentrating on delivering these products in new markets such as Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Kochi, Kozhikode, and Coimbatore. The brand already commenced the delivery of pre-ordered Ather 450X Series 1 in these cities. Its national launch is scheduled for 28th January 2020.
