Oil Companies Rule Out E20 Fuel Contamination Claims After Nationwide Testing

Amid recent claims of widespread contamination in E20 petrol, the state-run Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) carried out a nationwide intensive testing covering the entire fuel supply chain and found the claims baseless. OMCs stated that they haven’t found any evidence to support reports of elevated chloride and moisture levels.

OMCs have conducted chloride monitoring at multiple point of supply chain, including refineries, distilleries, depots/terminals and retail outlets nationwide, confirming that quality is being consistently maintained throughout the supply chain. According to the oil companies, testing included more than 100 petrol samples from refineries, ethanol supplied by 80 distilleries, more than 80 samples from terminals and over 160 samples from retail outlets, all of which recorded chloride levels between 0ppm and 3ppm. Only two outlets were recorded with elevated chloride levels during the testing exercise, both of which have been suspended, investigated and restored after implementing corrective measures.

E20 ethanol blended petrol fuel advantages and disadvantages.

For moisture, about 90,000 ROs have commenced mandatory inspection and monitoring 8–12 times every day, and no water ingress has been detected so far.

The OMCs have also appealed to continue using E20 petrol without any hesitation, as they meet quality specifications at every stage of fuel supply.
