2026 Tata Tiago CNG vs Tiago EV: Which Car Should You Buy?

Looking for a new budget car for your daily commutes with low running costs? Well, you might have come across the Tata Tiago, which has recently undergone a much-needed facelift, bringing significant design changes and new features on board. Nevertheless, the Tiago is India’s most affordable offering that comes in petrol, CNG and electric versions. Among these, both the CNG and electric versions make sense for low operating costs, depending on your use cases. That’s why we have compared both the CNG and electric iterations of the Tata Tiago to help you make an informed decision: –

As is clear from the above table, both the Tiago CNG and Tiago EV have identical width and wheelbase, which means they will offer the same space inside the cabin. However, the difference in length you see here is mainly because of the different design of the bumpers in both versions, whereas the difference in height is mainly to accommodate the battery pack.

*These are claimed figures; output in the real world might vary.

  • On paper, the Tiago CNG has identical power output as the Tiago EV’s 24kWh variant; however, it produces much less torque, which makes it feel sluggish on the road. Things further amplify with the AMT gearbox, which tends to hesitate during gear shifts, resulting in a noticeable lag and a less responsive driving experience overall.
  • Speaking of the mileage/range, the above-mentioned stats are claimed figures, and the actual figures might vary in the real-world. Expect the Tiago CNG to offer fuel efficiency between 20-23 km/kg, while the Tiago EV claims nearly 200km of range in city driving conditions.

Tata Tiago EV vs CNG: running cost

Which Car Should You Buy?

As is clear from the above table, the Tiago EV commands a premium of nearly Rs 1.44 lakh (ex-showroom) over its CNG counterpart. However, being an EV, you can save on road tax, which you have to pay for the ICE version, and this will ultimately bring its cost slightly closer to that of its electric counterpart. Moreover, the electric version also offers several advantages over the CNG version, such as better boot space and more convenience features.

So, if you can charge it at home, the running cost will be as low as Rs 1.5-2.5/km, whereas the CNG version will cost between Rs 4-5 per km. However, charging the EV takes a few hours, whereas the CNG can be filled in just a couple of minutes, provided there are no long queues at the pump.

Given this, if your driving is primarily within the city limits and your average daily running is around or above 40-50 km, and you have access to home charging, we recommend going with the Tiago EV. On the contrary, if you frequently undertake intercity commutes, the CNG version would be a more practical choice for you.
