Maruti Suzuki Escudo: A New Compact SUV Incoming!

Maruti Suzuki is gearing up to launch yet another SUV in its India lineup. Codenamed Y17 for internal usage, it is expected to be named “Escudo”. This new SUV is likely to be positioned between the Brezza and Grand Vitara.

Did You Know? Suzuki is already using the “Escudo” nameplate for the Vitara in Japan

While details are scarce at the moment, it is expected to be underpinned by Suzuki’s global C platform. The same is also used for the Grand Vitara. However, it will likely be tweaked to offer a longer wheelbase and more cabin space. It is expected to be sold through the brand’s Arena dealership and could be positioned more affordably than the Grand Vitara.

In terms of features, it is likely to share its equipment list with the Grand Vitara, though it may skip a few elements like electronic parking brakes and rear sunshades. However, features such as a floating touchscreen infotainment system, wireless smartphone connectivity, a digital cluster, a panoramic sunroof, auto AC, rear AC vents, a 360-degree camera, ventilated front seats, and ADAS could be offered. The ADAS suite is also expected to be introduced in the Grand Vitara soon.

Underneath the hood, it is expected to be powered by the brand’s 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine, paired with a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission. While it is not official, we expect Maruti to also offer it with its currently under-development Series Hybrid System, which is likely to make its debut with the Fronx facelift.

Expect the Maruti Suzuki Escudo to hit the Indian roads around the upcoming festive season, with prices likely to start from around Rs 9.50 lakh (ex-showroom). Once launched, it will go against the likes of Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Skoda Kushaq, Honda Elevate, Volkswagen Taigun and MG Astor.
