MG Windsor EV Review: Pros and Cons

The MG Windsor EV has recently joined the emerging EV market in the country, positioning itself as a practical and eco-friendly alternative to the mid-size SUVs. With a focus on affordability and comfort, this crossover EV offers a unique blend of features, including a Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) rental model, which lowers initial costs for buyers. In this story, we dive into the pros and cons of the MG Windsor EV to help you decide if it’s the right choice for you.

Things we like about MG Windsor EV (Pros)

  • MG has priced it competitively, making it a strong contender against rivals. The Battery as a Service (BaaS) option helps lower the initial cost.
  • The Windsor has a solid build quality that feels premium.
  • Stylish cabin with spacious interiors, especially comfortable rear seats with ample legroom and headroom, making it a practical and comfortable crossover.
  • A massive 604-litre boot (579 litres in the top variant), spacious enough to accommodate luggage for a long family trip.
  • Loaded with modern features like electronic flush door handles, adjustable regenerative braking for different driving situations, selectable drive modes, ventilated front seats, 135-degree reclining rear seats, a 15.6-inch touchscreen with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, connected car tech, OTT apps, Infinity tuned sound system, panoramic glassroof, ambient lighting, 360-degree camera, six airbags and more. Even the base variant comes impressively well-equipped with a wide range of features.
  • The Windsor is powerful enough for both city and highway driving. The throttle response is smooth, making the car glide effortlessly on the road. Overtaking is also easy as its 134PS motor reacts promptly when required.
  • Regenerative braking is smooth and jerk-free, offering a seamless transition when slowing down.

Things that could have been better about MG Windsor EV (Cons)

  • The front profile of the car is slightly polarising.
  • The real-world range of roughly 240 km is ideal for city and urban driving, but range anxiety remains a concern for longer trips. Offering a larger 50 kWh battery would have addressed this issue better.
  • Given the battery pack size, the overall driving experience is comfortable and easy, but it lacks a sense of excitement in performance.
  • Over-reliance on the touchscreen for various functions like ORVM adjustment, selecting regen modes, etc., can be inconvenient due to a lack of physical buttons.
  • Rear wiper and spare wheel are big miss.
  • With large windows and a glass roof, AC takes a while to cool the cabin.

Conclusion

The Windsor EV is undoubtedly an appealing option for urban dwellers looking for a cost-effective, spacious, practical and comfortable car, with a modern interior and features. Yes, its limited drive range and some other minor issues mentioned above are essential to consider but going by its pricing, the MG Windsor EV seems a very strong package in the EV segment.
