Triumph Speed 400 vs Scrambler 400X – Difference Explained

The highly anticipated Triumph Speed 400 roadster and the Scrambler 400X have recently made their global debut, with their India launch scheduled for July 5. Both motorcycles have been co-developed with Bajaj Auto. While the two bikes share certain similarities, they possess distinct characteristics that set them apart from each other.

Suspension System

  • While both the Speed 400 and Scrambler 400X get 43mm golden-coloured upside-down (USD) forks and preload-adjustable gas-charged mono shocks at the rear, their suspension travels differ from each other.
  • Since the Speed 400 is designed for on-road riding with a focus on comfort & high-speed stability, the Speed 400 has a shorter suspension travel of 140mm upfront and 130mm at the rear. On the other hand, the Scrambler 400X gets 150mm wheel travel at both ends to handle rough terrains and absorb impacts.

Braking System

  • The Triumph Scrambler 400X gets a larger 320mm unit up front, providing enhanced stopping power. In contrast, the Speed 400 is equipped with a 300mm front disc brake.
  • At the rear, both models share the same 230mm disc, assisted by dual-channel Antilock Braking System (ABS).
  • Being a versatile off-road motorcycle, the ABS can be switched off in Scram for off-road use.

Wheel Size and Tyres

  • Despite their diverse nature, the Triumph Scrambler 400X and Speed 400 get identical 10-spoke cast aluminium alloys. However, the Speed 400 gets 17-inch alloys with road-oriented Metzeler Sportec M9RR tyres, whereas the Scrambler gets a bigger 19-inch front and the smaller 17-inch rear unit, shod with Metzeler Karoo Street tyres for optimum traction on both on and off-road surfaces.
