Govt Could Ban 1 Million Diesel Vehicles In Delhi To Control Air Pollution

According to an analysis of government data, the air quality index of 450 could lead to the suspension of close to 9,50,000 diesel vehicles in the national capital region, including private cars, posing a threat to commuters unless adequate measures are taken.

The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has recently revised its Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) to curb air pollution in the national capital region, which requires authorities to ban all diesel vehicles in Delhi and neighboring cities if the AQI rises above the 450 mark, which is actually the trigger point of the 4th and final stage of restrictions. After the ban, only BS6-compliant diesel vehicles will be allowed to ply on the roads. The CAQM has also allowed banning BS3 and BS4 diesel cars if the AQI goes above 400.

According to government data, Delhi alone has 9,42,447 registered diesel vehicles. Out of these, only 27,860 vehicles comply with the BS6 emission standards, which actually curbs the tailpipe emission of NOx and other pollutant particles in a more rigorous manner.

The government will soon hold a meeting to discuss the implementation of the new GRAP measures.
