Delhi Government To Deregister 10 Years Older Diesel Cars From January 1

The Delhi Government has announced that it will start deregistering diesel cars that have completed or will turn 10 years old on 1st January 2022. This move complies with the National Green Tribunal’s (NGT) order in the case of Vardhaman Kaushik Vs Union of India & Ors [OA Nos. 21 of 2014 and 94 of 2014]. Earlier this month, the NCT govt has also announced mandatory scrapping for petrol and diesel vehicles older than 15-years.

new diesel cars rules in Delhi and India

The govt has stated that a No objection certificate (NOC) can be issued for diesel vehicles up to 10 years and petrol vehicles under 15 years so that the owners can re-register their cars in other states apart from the national capital. However, it is worth noting that the NOC will not be provided for diesel vehicles that have completed 15 years or more. Also, take into account that no NOC will not be issued for states which are identified as restricted areas for re-registration due to any order of NGT.

Owners who do not want to sell/re-register their old vehicles in other states can retrofit an electric powertrain in their cars through a certified agency by the transport department. The empanelment process for electric kits is under process.

In other updates, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) is also planning to levy a 'Green Tax' on old polluting vehicles, under which vehicle owners will have to spend extra money while renewing their Registration Certificates (RC). This will discourage people from using old polluting vehicles and prompt them to shift to electric or new vehicles with less pollution.
