Toyota Yaris Hatchback Spied Testing In India

The Toyota Yaris hatchback was recently spied testing in Delhi, suggesting that the brand is planning to introduce this global model in India. However, the brand is yet to share any official word regarding its India launch.

Currently, this nameplate is being used for its sedan version that is likely to be replaced by a Maruti Ciaz-based new model soon. So, we can expect Toyota to re-introduce Yaris in a hatchback avatar for our country.

The Japanese carmaker updated the Yaris hatchback last year. The new iteration of this hot hatch not only received cosmetic improvements but also got a number of additional features, including the Toyota Safety Sense (TSS), which comprises many safety and driver-assist features like a 3D Panoramic View Monitor, Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, adaptive cruise control, etc. The car is based on a derivative of Toyota’s TNGA (Toyota New Global Architecture) platform, called GA-B. It measures 3,940 mm in length and is claimed to have a best-in-class turning circle.

Globally, Toyota offers the Yaris hatchback with three petrol engines: – a 1.0-liter, 1.5-liter, and 1.5-liter hybrid. The hybrid powertrain comes with an electric motor mounted on the front axle and an air-cooled lithium-ion battery. Depending on the engine, it gets a 5-speed manual, 6-speed manual, and CVT automatic transmission options. It also gets a sportier version called the 'GR Yaris' in the international market.

Currently, Toyota sells the Maruti Baleno-based Glanza hatchback in the Indian market, which is attracting a decent number of buyers for the brand. Priced between Rs 7.34 lakh to Rs 9.30 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi), it rivals the Hyundai i20, Tata Altroz, Volkswagen Polo, and its donor Maruti Suzuki Baleno.
