2021 Mercedes-AMG E 53 And E 63S Launched In India

After bringing facelifted E-Class in March 2021, the Mercedes Benz has now launched its performance-oriented AMG version in the Indian market. Interestingly, this time it also gets the six-cylinder E 53 variant alongside the V8-powered E 63S trim. Here’s a look at the prices: –

AMG E 53

Rs 1.02 crore

AMG E 63S

Rs 1.70 crore

Unlike the standard E-Class that is available with the long-wheelbase version in India, the AMG E53 and E63 S come with the standard wheelbase. While design and feature changes are similar to the facelifted E-Class, both models look more sporty thanks to the AMG-specific design elements that are in line with the latest AMG cars. These include the AMG-esque Panamericana front grille with an enlarged Mercedes logo, aggressively styled front bumper, flared wheel arches fitting in the 20-inch forged alloy wheels, updated LED taillamps, and revised rear bumper with AMG’s quad-exhaust tips. The E 63S also gets red brake calipers.

 Mercedes-AMG E 53 interior and features

On the inside, the changes are quite insignificant. Both models get a similarly styled dashboard as the regular E-Class. However, they sport a new AMG dual-spoke steering wheel with larger aluminium paddle shifters and haptic feedback controls, along with AMG-specific graphics in their dual-screen setup, comprising a 12.3-inch touchscreen MBUX infotainment system and a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster.

Also, part of the kit is an AMG-specific upholstery, multiple driving modes, tri-zone climate control, heated front seats, 64-colour ambient lighting, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity, wireless phone chargers, Burmester premium sound system, touchpad in the center console, tire pressure monitoring system, a 360-degree camera, autonomous emergency braking, and AMG Ride Control+ air suspension. The E 63S also gets a few exclusives features such as a heads-up display and AMG buttons on the steering wheel.

Engine and gearbox

Powering the Mercedes-AMG E 53 is a 3.0-liter in-line- six-cylinder twin-turbo petrol engine (435PS/520Nm) that also does duty for the GLE 53 Coupe. It also comes with a Mercedes EQ Boost, 48V mild-hybrid system that can add up to 22PS and 250Nm to the overall output under hard acceleration for a short duration. It also permits other functions like engine start/stop, coasting, and energy recuperation. The transmission duties are taken care of by a 9-speed automatic gearbox, powering all four wheels via the Mercedes’ advance 4Matic+ all-wheel-drive system.

Performance-wise, this speed demon can hit the 0-100 kmph mark in just 4.5 seconds and can attain a top speed of 285 kmph.

On the other hand, the E 63S is powered by the same 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 petrol engine (612PS/850Nm) as the pre-facelift model. The engine is paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission and an AWD system. Also on offer is a cylinder deactivation technology for enhanced fuel efficiency. It touches the 100 kmph mark in just 3.4 seconds and has an electronically limited top speed of 300 kmph.

Rivals

While the Mercedes-AMG E53 has no direct rivals in the Indian market, the E 63S can be seen as an alternative to the facelifted BMW M5 Competition (Rs 1.62 crore) and the Audi RS7 (Rs 1.94 crore).
