2021 MG ZS Petrol Likely To Be Known As 'Astor'

MG Motors has recently launched the updated ZS EV with an enhanced drive range. Now, the British-Chinese brand is gearing up to introduce the petrol-powered version of the ZS SUV (codename- Model K). It is expected to hit the Indian roads around the festive season. However, it is unlikely to carry forward the 'ZS' moniker and could be named ‘Astor’ as the brand has recently fielded this nomenclature for the Indian market.

The MG ZS petrol (Astor) will be positioned below the Hector mid-sized SUV and will rival the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Nissan Kicks, Renault Duster, and the upcoming Volkswagen Taigun in the Indian market. It is expected to be based on the facelifted ZS, which is currently available for sales overseas. However, its electric version available in India is in its pre-facelift form. Hence, compared to the EV, the Petrol-powered ZS will get a redesigned front fascia with a honeycomb pattern grille, sharper headlamps with integrated LED DRLs, and refreshed bumper. It will also get new alloy wheels, reworked LED tail-lamps, and some minor aesthetical changes inside the cabin.

Features on the board will include an LED lighting system, panoramic sunroof, a 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system (compared to the 8.0-inch unit of the ZS EV) with connected car technology, Hinglish voice command compatibility, a digital instrument cluster, air purifier, six airbags, etc. It could also get ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance System) technology similar to the full-sized Gloster SUV.

MG Astor

Under the hood, MG could offer the ZS/Astor with 1.3-litre turbocharged and 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engines, which are capable of producing 163PS/230Nm and 120PS/150Nm, respectively. It will get both manual and automatic transmission options.

As the brand is working on increasing the localization of its products, the upcoming MG SUV is expected to be priced in the range of Rs 10-15 lakh (ex-showroom).
