Mahindra Thar 6-Seater AX Std & AX Discontinued From Its Variant Lineup

The second-generation Mahindra Thar SUV was launched on 2nd October 2020. At the time of launch, it was offered in four variants: AX Std (Standard), AX, AX (O), and LX. Now, the homegrown carmaker has discounted its base-spec AX STD & AX variants, which were available with a 6-seater layout, featuring side-facing jump-seats in the back.

Mahindra Thar 6-Seater AX Std & AX variants: Reason behind discontinuation

The all-new Thar has been the center of attraction for Mahindra since its launch. In fact, it is sold out till May 2021. As per the reports, the AX (O) & top-spec LX variants which are offered with front-facing rear seats, are in huge demand. Further, these four-seater trims have also received a 4-star Global NCAP crash test safety rating. Thus, Mahindra has decided to axe its lower-demanded 6-seater base-spec AX variants, which are also less safe in comparison to the 4-seater variants. Earlier, the brand first halted accepting its bookings and now has removed them from the variant line-up.

For the people not in know, both these trims were offered with the fixed soft top only, whereas the AX (O) and LX variants get the option of the convertible soft top & fixed hardtop roof. Moreover, the discontinued AX STD and AX variants used to come without rear seat belts and child seat anchors.

Prices have gone up by Rs 2 lakh

With this move, the prices for the 2020 Mahindra Thar now start from Rs 11.90 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi), which is approximately Rs 2 lakh more than the discontinued AX STD variant. The brand will further increase the prices in January 2021. Also, if you're eyeing to buy a new Thar now, you might have to wait for up to 8 to 9 months, depending on the city and variant selection. However, Mahindra has also ramped up production to hew the waiting period.

New exterior colors are on the card

The carmaker is also planning to introduce some new color options for the Thar off-roader as it has been spied during testing in a new silver and white color with blacked-out wheels. Currently, the Thar is available in six color options: Red, Grey, Aquamarine, Black, Rocky Beige, and Copper.

In the Indian market, Mahindra Thar doesn't have any direct rival, but it will soon face competition with the upcoming BS6 Force Gurkha and the Maruti Suzuki Jimny. In fact, Maruti has also begun trial production of Suzuki Jimny at its Gurugram facility ahead of its launch in 2021.
