Second Generation Maruti Celerio Is In Pipeline

The second-generation Maruti Celerio is in the works. Recently, it has been spied during testing. Maruti launched Celerio compact hatchback in 2014 followed by a facelift update in 2017. Now it is the correct time for the Indo-Japanese automaker to launch its next-generation model.

What do the spy shots reveal?

From the first glimpse, the new Celerio appears to be longer and wider than the outgoing model as it is likely to be underpinned by the new Heartect platform of Wagon-R and Swift. The overall layout of the car seems more upright. Though the car was heavily camouflaged due to which much information related to its design is not available at this time. However, it will get an entirely redesigned exterior and interior. Its new alloy design can be seen clearly in the above image.

Expected Engine

The 2nd Gen Celerior will be powered by the same 1.0-liter, 3 cylinders, Naturally Aspirated petrol engine (68PS/90Nm). Since the Celerio was the first car in India to offer an AMT (automated manual transmission), it will continue to get the same along with a 5-speed manual transmission option as well.

Maruti could also offer the 1.2-liter petrol (83PS/113Nm) engine with higher variants while the lower variants could get a factory-fitted CNG option.

Expected Launch & Pricing

2020 Maruti Celerio is expected to be launched by mid-2021. It will definitely demand a premium over the outgoing model which is priced at Rs 4.41 lakh to Rs 5.68 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).

Author's Take

The Maruti Celerio is known for its affordability and frugal nature. Its current model offers a decent set of equipment. The new Celerio is expected to offer better features and cabin comfort. However, it is unlikely to create a new benchmark in terms of specialties.

When the Celerios was launched back in 2014, it has given birth to the new era of AMT cars which granted access to a large audience to own an automatic car at a reasonable price tag. Will Maruti again make history with the new Celerio? Well, that time will tell.
