Mahindra has started real-world testing of the long-wheelbase (LWB) 5-door Thar off-roader ahead of its expected arrival in 2023. Here’s what one can expect from it: –
– The upcoming 5-door Mahindra Thar will underpin the same platform as the new Scorpio N, which is quite stiff than the existing Thar’s platform, that results in improved handling & ride quality, especially at highway speeds. It is also expected to get Scorpio N’s Penta-link rear suspension for added stability.
– Dimension-wise, the LWB Mahindra Thar will be shorter than the Scorpio N. For reference, the Scorpio N measures 4,662mm in length and has a wheelbase of 2,750mm, whereas the ongoing Thar is 3,985mm long and possesses a wheelbase of 2,450mm.
– The longer version of India’s highest-selling lifestyle off-roader will definitely get more creature comforts than its 3-door iteration to make it a more practical model for everyday usage. We assume the 5-door Thar to feature a rear armrest, rear AC vents, AdrenoX powered infotainment system with wireless smartphone integration support, connected car technology, multiple driving modes, and front & rear parking cameras over its current model.
Also Read:
– Unlike the existing Thar which comes with the choice of a fixed hard top and a convertible soft top roof, its LWB version is likely to feature a fix-type or a removable hardtop.
– In an elongated avatar, the Thar will come in multiple seating options.
– Beneath the bonnet, the 5-door Mahindra Thar is likely to retain the same 2.0-liter turbo-petrol and 2.2-liter diesel engines from its smaller version, albeit in different states of tune. Transmission options (6-speed MT and AT) are also expected to remain unchanged; however, it is unlikely to get a 4×4 drivetrain as standard.
– Expect Mahindra to showcase it in a near-production avatar at the 2023 Auto Expo.
