Vehicles Older Than 15-Years To Be Mandatorily Scrapped In Delhi

In order to curb air pollution in National Capital Territory (NCT), the Delhi Government has made mandatory scrapping for petrol and diesel vehicles older than 15-years. Until now, petrol cars older than 15 years and diesel cars older than 10 years were permitted to run on the roads if they passed their fitness tests. But the alarming air quality in the national capital forced the Delhi govt to take such an extreme step. Here are some important highlights of this new order: –

Delhi scrapping policy

  • It is mandatory for vehicles owners in Delhi to scrape their 15-years old end-of-life vehicles.

  • If such cars are found parked or plying on the road, they will be checked and seized immediately. The owner will also be fined and the authorities will further hand it over to the authorized scrapper.

  • The scrapper is to make arrangements to tow the car from the impound pit to the scrappage facility.

  • In case the scrapper is not available, the local police team will have the right to tow the vehicle to the pits, from where the scrapper will take it to the yard.

  • The scrapyard will give the right scrape value to the owner of the vehicle.

  • If there’s any disagreement between the owner and the scrapper, it shall be taken up to the nearest police station.

With this, the Central Govt's scrappage policy will not be applicable in Delhi as the NCT govt has imposed stricter norms. Besides, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) is also planning to impose a 'GREEN TAX' on old polluting vehicles that will discourage people from using older polluting vehicles and prompt them to shift to less polluting new or electric vehicles.
