Toyota Fortuner Gets Mild-Hybrid Technology In This Country

Toyota has introduced a mild-hybrid version of the Fortuner SUV in South Africa. Last year, the Japanese carmaker introduced the Hilux with a similar mild-hybrid system for the European market. The Fortuner MHEV might also make its way to other markets, including India, in the near future.

What Powers Toyota Fortuner Mild-Hybrid?

Similar to the Hilux MHEV, the Fortuner is also powered by the familiar 2.8-litre diesel engine, coupled with a 48V mild-hybrid system that provides an additional boost of 16PS and 65Nm to the engine output, resulting in a combined output of 201PS and 500Nm. Additionally, it boosts fuel efficiency by 5 per cent and improves throttle response while ensuring smoother engine restarts with its new idle start/stop system.

Toyota offers the Fortuner Mild-Hybrid version with a 6-speed manual gearbox, available with both 2WD and 4WD options.

Added Safety with ADAS

In addition to the mild-hybrid system, the Fortuner now also receives a 360-degree surround view system and Toyota Safety Sense ADAS suite, including lane departure alert and blind-spot monitoring system. Features like an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment with Apple Carplay and Android Auto, JBL sound system, and dual-zone climate control have been retained.

Will It Be Launched In India?

While Toyota has not yet revealed any plans to bring the mild hybrid system to India, we anticipate its introduction in the near future. Currently, the Fortuner is priced between Rs 33.43 lakh and Rs 42.32 lakh (ex-showroom) in India, competing with the MG Gloster, Isuzu muX and the petrol-only Skoda Kodiaq.
