Temporary Hold on Toyota Innova Crysta, Fortuner, and Hilux Shipments Amid Certification Irregularities

Toyota India has temporarily stopped despatches of the Innova Crysta, Fortuner, and Hilux amid the irregularities in the output tests of these diesel models.

Toyota Industries Corporation (TICO), commissioned by Toyota Motor Corporation, reported certification irregularities in horsepower testing for three diesel engines – the 1GD, 2GD and F33A. Out of these, the 2.8-litre 1GD and 2.4-litre 2GD engines are offered in models sold in India. The former engine powers the Indian-spec Toyota Hilux and Fortuner, whereas the Innova Crysta gets the latter 2.4-litre 2GD unit.

During certification testing, the horsepower output performance of their engines was measured using ECUs with software different from the one used for mass production. This was done to make values appear smoother with less variation.

Ten vehicle models worldwide are equipped with these affected engines, including three in India. Therefore, TIOC decided to suspend the shipments of these affected engines temporarily. However, the company has clarified that the discrepancy didn’t result in any overstatement of horsepower and torque figures. Also, it has no impact on the emissions and safety of the affected vehicles. Thus, there is no need to stop using the affected engines or vehicles.
