Tata Sierra EV Will Be A Reality Soon

Tata Motors stunned everyone at the 2020 Auto Expo by previewing the electric Sierra concept. It packed all the bits of the legendary Sierra SUV. Now, media reports are suggesting that the carmaker has given the green signal to the Sierra EV project after conducting a feasibility study. It will be one of the ten new electric vehicles (EVs) that Tata has planned over the next five years.

Unlike the ongoing Tata EVs (Nexon and Tigor), which are based on the same platform as their ICE counterpart, Sierra Electric will be based on an all-new dedicated EV platform that is likely to be called SIGMA. It is essentially a heavily re-engineered version of the ALFA platform with no compromise on overall packaging. That said, there will be no choice of a petrol or diesel engine with the new Tata Sierra. While technical details are yet to be revealed, the new Sierra will likely feature an advanced version of the Ziptron EV powertrain for a range of over 400km on a single charge.

Reports are also suggesting that it will come in a conventional five-door layout, whereas its concept model showcased at the last Auto Expo was having a unique ‘four-door’ configuration, featuring one door on the driver side and two doors on the passenger side. Besides, it is expected to carry forward all the iconic elements from the original Sierra such as tall stance, boxy dimensions, and the alpine windows for the rear section.  

It is a bit early to presume on the exact timeline and the prices of the Tata Sierra. But it is unlikely to make its way to the Indian market anytime soon.
