Royal Enfield Scram 440 Sales Halted Over Faulty Parts Concerns

Royal Enfield has temporarily stopped bookings, sales and deliveries of the Scram 440 over concerns related to a faulty engine part. In fact, reports suggest that its bookings and sales were stopped around April 10.

Royal Enfield offers the Scram 440 in two variants โ€“ Trail and Force, priced at Rs 2.08 lakh and Rs 2.15 lakh (ex-showroom). The brand is expected to resume its bookings and deliveries in June this year.

Reason Behind Stopping Bookings

According to media reports, the issue was related to starting the engine. The affected units (which are claimed to be only 2% of the total sold units so far), were facing difficulties in starting the engine after being used for some time. However, there were no reports about engine stalling mid-ride. This issue is said to be due to a faulty component called the Woodruff Key within the magneto.

Royal Enfield has already started sending updated components to dealers, which will be installed on the faulty bikes.

What is Woodruff Key?

A woodruff is a half-moon-shaped semi-circular key that is used to connect a shaft and a gear/pulley so that they can rotate together. It is used in engine components like gearboxes, starters, and alternators. In the case of Scram 440, the key is used within the magneto, which actually generates electrical power from the engine. If the key doesnโ€™t fit properly or gets damaged, it can cause trouble with engine starting.
