It’s official now! Maruti Suzuki’s version of the Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder will be called “Grand Vitara”. It is slated to debut on July 20, 2022. Pre-bookings of the SUV are also now open for a token amount of Rs 11,000 both online and at authorised Nexa dealerships.
Similar to the Hyryder, the upcoming Grand Vitara will also be based on the Suzuki’s C-platform. It will replace the S-Cross from the brand’s existing lineup.
Powering the upcoming Maruti Grand Vitara will be either a Suzuki’s 1.5-litre K15C petrol engine paired with a 48V mild-hybrid system or Toyota’s 1.5-litre TNGA petrol engine linked with a self-charging string hybrid system that can run the SUV in pure EV mode as well. Transmission options will include a 5-speed manual and a 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission for thew mild-hybrid engine, whereas the strong-hybrid unit will get a single-speed e-CVT transmission (same as Honda City e:HEV).

Design-wise, the Grand Vitara will look different from the Hyryder. While the complete design is yet to be revealed, the official teaser reveals the connecting LED taillamp of the SUV that will slightly remind you of the Volkswagen Taigun.
In term of features, the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara will be more or less the same as Toyota Hyryder. That said, it will come loaded with features like panoramic sunroof, leather upholstery, dual-zone climate control, ventilated front seats, ambient lighting, wireless smartphone charging, a heads-up display (HUD), premium sound system (Arkamys tuned), connected car tech (55+ features) with remote control functionality, 360-degree camera, 6 airbags, Vehicle Stability Control, Hill Hold & Descent Control, etc.
Expect Maruti to price the new Grand Vitara from around Rs 10.5 lakh (ex-showroom), pitting it against the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Nissan Kicks, Volkswagen Taigun, Skoda Kushaq, and Toyota Hyryder. The homegrown carmaker will also export this upcoming SUV to some European countries.
