Maharashtra Targets 10% Registrations Of EVs By 2025

In order to maximize the adoption of electric vehicles in Maharashtra, the state government has rolled out a new draft for the electric vehicle (EV) policy 2021 with an aim to achieve at least 10 percent EVs share in total new vehicle registrations by 2025. The policy is awaiting final clearance from the state cabinet. Here are some major points of the policy that were revealed by Maharashtra state transport commissioner Avinash Dhakne at a webinar on electric vehicle mobility organized by Climate Voices along with the Maharashtra Environment and Climate Change Department’s Majhi Vasundhara initiative.

  • The government is anticipating the share of EVs in new vehicle registrations across the state to be 10% for two-wheelers, 20% for three-wheelers, and 5% for four-wheelers, by 2025.

  • The govt plans to electrification of 15 percent of the current fleet of 18,000 MSRTC buses. 

  • The policy also aims to replace all government vehicles in major cities with EVs, starting from April 2022. 

  • Govt is also planning to make four EVs compatible highways & expressways in the state by 2025, including Mumbai-Pune Expressway, Mumbai-Nashik highway, Nashik-Pune highway, and the Mumbai-Nagpur Expressway that is currently under construction. 

  • The minister has also stated that the govt has city-wise targets to set up EV charging infrastructure by 2025. Under this plan, the govt will set up 1,500 charging stations in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, 500 in Pune, 150 in Nagpur, 100 in Nashik, and 75 in Aurangabad. In addition, the Maharashtra government also intends to set up at least one Giga factory for the production of lithium-ion batteries in the state.
