Long Range Tata Nexon EV Likely To Be Launched By Mid-2022

Tata Motors is working on the upgraded Nexon EV that will come with a bigger battery pack and extended range. It is likely to be launched by mid-2022 and could be sold alongside the ongoing Nexon EV, which is currently the highest-selling electric car in the Indian market (commanding over 60 percent market share in the EV segment).

Tata Nexon EV Range

According to reports, the upgraded Nexon EV will get a new battery pack of 40kWh capacity as against the 30.2kWh unit of the current model. To accommodate this 30 percent bigger battery, Tata engineers will modify the floor pan. With this, the boot space of the sub-4m SUV will be compromised to some extent, and the weight of the vehicle will also increase by about 100 kg.

The upgraded Nexon EV is likely to deliver a claimed range of over 400km. This means that we can expect a real-world range of around 300 to 320 km on a single charge. This will make it slightly capable for outstation trips. As of now, the ongoing Nexon EV offers a claimed range of 320 kilometres; however, the real-world range is approximately 180-200km. That makes it mainly a city runabout.

The new electrified SUV is also likely to offer selectable modes for regenerative braking (to adjust its intensity in order to improve range), Electronic Stability Program (ESP), and a few new comfort features along with some minor cosmetic tweaks.

All these aforementioned changes will certainly increase its prices by around Rs 3 lakh. For reference, the Tata Nexon EV is currently priced between Rs 14.24 – 16.85 lakh (ex-showroom), making it quite affordable than the MG ZS EV (Rs 20.99 – 24.68 lakh) and Hyundai Kona Electric (Rs 23.79 – 23.97 lakh). However, both of these EVs offer better range and features than the electrified Nexon.
