Honda Activa e To Disrupt EV Market With Battery Subscription Model

Honda 2-wheelers India has recently unveiled the Activa e and the QC1 electric scooters. While the Activa will be offered with swappable batteries, the QC1 will get a fixed-type battery. Both EVs promise to shake things up with an innovative pricing strategy, especially the Activa e, which will be sold without a battery. This will make the initial purchase price very competitive. Instead of a traditional battery-included model, Honda will offer a battery subscription plan for the Activa e, allowing users to pay for battery usage separately.

This is aimed at lowering the upfront cost and making electric mobility more accessible to a wider section of the audience. This will also provide additional peace of mind for buyers who are concerned about range anxiety, battery maintenance, charging time and longevity. The company is likely to take full responsibility for the battery’s health.

Honda Activa e: Battery Swapping Made Easy

Honda will offer a convenient battery-swapping system for the Activa e that will allow users to quickly swap out a discharged battery for a fully charged one at the Honda e:SWAP stations. This will ensure minimal downtime by eliminating the need to wait for hours to charge the battery.

It is worth noting that the batteries cannot be charged at home and must be swapped exclusively at the designated swapping stations.

Subscription Details To Be Announced

Officials at Honda confirmed that more details about the battery subscription plans for the Activa e will be announced at the time of launch in January 2025. We expect it to include options for various usage levels, catering to both daily commuters and occasional riders. Pricing tiers could offer flexibility in terms of battery swaps per month or total distance covered.

Honda Activa e: Specifications

To jog your memory, the electrified Honda Activa will come with two removable batteries, each of 1.5 kWh, promising an IDC range of 102 km per charge. It will be powered by a 6kW PMSM motor that will produce a peak torque of 22Nm, enabling the scooter to do the 0 to 60 kmph sprint in 7.3 seconds. It has a top speed of 80 kmph.

Author’s Take

While Honda’s innovative battery swapping model for Activa e: might offer affordability and convenience, it does raise some concerns. The absence of home charging option could be a potential drawback for users who perefer the flexibility of charging at their own convenience. Offering both swapping and home charging options would provide a more well-rounded solution.
