Global NCAP Reassesses Maruti Suzuki Ertiga, Grants 1-Star Safety Rating

The Maruti Suzuki Ertiga has received a disappointing 1-star safety rating in the latest Global NCAP crash tests. The vehicle tested is sold in South Africa but made in India. Back in 2019, the Ertiga earned a three-star rating. However, with the introduction of more rigorous protocols in July 2022, the 2024 model fell short in the updated evaluations.

Adult Occupant Protection: 23.63/34 Pts (69.5 Percent)

Frontal Impact Test

  • Head and Neck Protection: Rated as ‘good’ for both driver and passenger.
  • Chest Protection: ‘Marginal’ for the driver, ‘good’ for the passenger.
  • Knee Protection: ‘Marginal’ for both driver and passenger due to potential contact with hazardous structures behind the dashboard.
  • Tibias Protection: ‘Adequate’ for both driver and passenger.
  • Footwell Area: Rated as ‘unstable.’
  • Bodyshell: Assessed as ‘unstable,’ indicating it cannot withstand additional loadings.

Side Impact Test

  • Head, Abdomen, and Pelvis Protection: Rated as ‘good.’
  • Chest Protection: Rated as ‘adequate.’
  • Side Pole Impact Test: Not conducted due to the absence of curtain airbags, even as an option.

Child Occupant Protection: 19.40/49 Pts (39.77 Percent)

  • 3-Year-Old Dummy: Installed forward-facing using ISOFIX mounts and top restraints.
    • Frontal Impact Test:
      • Head Protection: Successfully prevented head exposure.
      • Chest and Neck Protection: Limited protection.
  • 18-Month-Old Dummy: Installed forward-facing using ISOFIX mounts and top restraints.
    • Frontal Impact Test:
      • Protection: Poor protection for the chest and neck due to high-speed deceleration.
  • Side Impact Test: Both dummies received full protection.

Maruti Ertiga Price and Rivals

Currently, Maruti Suzuki retails the Ertiga from Rs 8.69 lakh to Rs 13.03 lakh (ex-showroom), positioning it as a more affordable alternative to the Kia Carens and Toyota Innova Crysta.
