F-150 Lightning: Ford’s First All-Electric Pickup Truck Revealed

Ford has taken the wraps off from the electrified version of its most popular F-150 pickup truck, called F-150 Lightning. Here are five things that you would like to know about the truck of the future: –

1. Ford F-150 Lightning – Exterior Design 

The new F-150 Lightning EV is based on the latest generation of F-150 gasoline-powered pickup truck, and thus, shares a lot of common elements and design cues with the standard model. However, it gets some electrified specific closed-off front grille that will comes in three different design patterns for better aerodynamics than the conventional F150. It also features slightly altered bumpers and a more futuristic lighting design with LED light bars spanning the width of the truck at both front & rear ends. There are also differently styled alloy wheels giving it a futuristic look. Also, the F-150 Lightning offers the biggest front-loading cargo space in its segment with over 14.1cubic feet (400-liters) of dry storage area and 181kg of payload capacity. 

2. Ford F-150 Lightning – Interior & Features

Similar to the Mustang Mach-E, the F-150 Lightning also gets a 15.5-inch vertical oriented infotainment system that comes with integrated controls & rotary dials for the climate control system. It also gets over-the-air (OTA) software updates support, 4G LTE wireless hotspot, and FordPass connected car technology that also the owners to remotely control various features of the truck through their smartphone. It also helps in communicating with a Ford Charging Station Pro for seamless access to public charging stations. There's also a convenience feature called Power My Trip that only shows the charging stations on your route but also optimizes the driving experiences by taking payload and towing status into account. Also, the Intelligent Range feature calculates the amount of energy used in different conditions and informs you about the estimated range. 

The other notable features of the F-150 lightning are as follows: –  

  • Foldable Interior Work Surface for your go-to office. 
  • Bluecruise Hands-free driving is an autonomous driving system that automatically drives the truck with the help of taking feeds from cameras and radar-sensing technologies. 
  • Pro Trailer Hitch Assist helps to hoot the trailer by automatically controlling the steering wheel & brakes to align the hitch ball & trailer coupler. The driver only needs to hold down a button and control the gears. 
  • Smart Hitch calculates appropriate tongue weight & guides weight distribution & hitch overloading. 
  • Travel Reverse Guidance that helps in reversing by showing ORVMs-mounted camera feeds on the central screen along with visual guides.  
  • Pro Trailer Backup Assist assists in backing up with a trailer with simply rotation of the dedicated knob given on the dash.
  • Onboard Scale measures payload weight automatically.
  • Multiple driving modes – Normal, Sport, Tow/haul, Off-road. 
  • Power outlets in frunk, cab, and bed.
  • There is also an 80-amp Ford Charge Station Pro and home management system, which automatically gets activated when there’s no power and keeps the small devices at your place switched on during a power blackout! 
  • Electronically lockable differential

3. Powertrain

The Ford F-150 Lightning will be available in two drive range options called Standard Range (SR) and Extended Range (ER). Both are powered by a dual-motor setup (one on each axle), making it a full-time all-wheel-drive pickup. While it will be available with two battery packs, Ford is yet to share reveal their individual capacity.

As for charging, this electrified Ford truck can be juiced up from 15-80% in just 41 minutes using a 150kW fast charger. However, the brand will offer two different types of onboard AC chargers ranging up to 19.2 kW, depending on the variant.

4. Variants, Prices, Launch Date, and Competitors

The F-150 Lightning will be available in a total of three variants – XLT, Lariant, and Platinum, with their pricing starting from USD 39,974 (Rs 29.23 lakh) in the USA. The brand will also launch a commercially oriented version of this pickup at a later stage. It will be launched in the second quarter of 2022. However, its bookings have already been commenced for a token amount of $100 (Rs 7,313). On its arrival in the American markets, it will rival the pure electric Tesla Cybertruck.

5. Will Ford launch it in India? 

Ford is unlikely to bring F-150 Lightning to India. However, the brand could introduce the Mustang Mach-E in our country in near future. As of now, the brand is gearing up to introduce a new compact SUV that will rival the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos.
