China and Europe Will Now Share Auto Data Seamlessly

Catena-X, a global automotive data network, has created the world’s first cross-border automotive data sharing ecosystem that will allow car companies in China and Europe to safely share data without losing control of it. This addresses the growing regulatory requirements facing the global automotive industry.

Why It Matters?

In 2023, the European Union (EU) implemented a battery regulation, mandating a “battery passport” for every industrial and EV battery with a capacity exceeding 2kWh within the EU. This rule will take effect on Feb 1, 2027. Consequently, as a leading global battery supplier, China requires a system for sharing industrial data across borders to sell its battery packs or EVs and plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) in the European market.

EV Battery Life Cycle explained

What Is Battery Passport?

A battery passport is a digital record of a physical battery, which stores information regarding the sources of mining and refining of the materials it uses, the manufacturers of the cell and battery, the vehicle brands, battery servicing details, the carbon footprint, companies involved in its refurbishing & recycling, and the battery’s health data throughout its entire lifecycle.

It can be accessed using a unique identifier and a QR code printed on the battery.

  • Catena-X enables carmakers, suppliers, and battery companies in both regions to share important data with each other safely and efficiently, ensuring the companies can share information while still having control over their own data.
  • Once battery passports are generated from real supply chain data, they will be accepted on both sides of the border, under Chinese rules and European regulations at the same time, reducing duplication and delays.
  • The new ecosystem will be operated from within China by a local partner named Zhonglian, making it easier to comply with local regulations.
  • What’s more interesting is that this platform is open and interoperable, meaning any qualified company can join and offer its services without being locked into a single provider.
  • The company has already completed its pilot testing with a European carmaker and Chinese battery manufacturer, and is now set to begin operations from mid-November.

What Does It Mean For The Indian Market?

For India and other automotive markets worldwide, this represents a big step towards simplifying regulatory compliance and enhancing transparency within the supply chain. Indian automobile companies and suppliers exporting to Europe will soon be required to meet similar data requirements. This could also open new opportunities for Indian companies in areas such as supply chain tracking and data solutions. As of now, Tata Motors has a similar, cloud-based solution called WATTSync, which is also designed in line with upcoming EU regulations.
