The central government is considering pushing the deadline for making the fitment of ABS (Antilock Braking System) a standard in all two-wheelers in India. Earlier, the norm was supposed to take effect from January 2026. As of now, ABS is compulsory for all 2-wheelers above 125cc, whereas those under 125cc are required to have a Combined Braking System (CBS).
Why Is There A Delay?
According to reports, this decision was made after multiple rounds of discussion between the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) and the Road Transport Ministry. Manufacturers have raised concerns about the feature’s efficacy and its financial burden on the entry-level vehicles, as equipping them with at least single-channel ABS is expected to increase their prices by approximately Rs 2,500 to Rs 5,000. This, they argue, will impact their value proposition and nullify the benefits of the recent GST cut.
Brands have also highlighted the practical challenge of scaling up ABS production at short notice, given that the directive was issued only in June 2025.

ABS Efficiency on Smaller Bikes
In the recent meeting with road transport minister Nitin Gadkari, manufacturers have also raised doubts about the effectiveness of ABS in the sub-125cc category. In response, the government has asked to consult ARAI to check how effective ABS really is on small-capacity two-wheelers. However, ARAI has not received any formal request yet. And even if they do, the testing will take time, as there are many bikes under 125cc in the Indian market.
Is Single-Channel ABS Really Beneficial?
Single-channel ABS is far safer than CBS because it prevents front-wheel lockup during sudden or slippery-condition braking, helping riders maintain control and avoid skidding. CBS only distributes braking force between wheels, offering smoother but not necessarily safer stops in emergencies. Single-channel ABS is affordable and a big upgrade over no ABS, especially for commuter bikes, but it still has limits since the rear wheel can lock up. Overall, it offers clear real-world safety benefits, though dual-channel ABS remains the ideal choice.
