EVs with Manual Gearbox? Ford’s New Patent Suggests So!

American automaker Ford has taken a bold step towards redefining the driving experience of electric vehicles by filing a patent for a manual gear shifter system. While EVs typically rely on single-speed transmission due to their instant torque delivery, Ford’s new concept aims to bring back the engaging feel of a manual transmission. This could attract driving enthusiasts who still crave the tactile connection of traditional ICE vehicles.

While details about the patent is sarce at the moment, let’s try to understand it with the image: –

  • The patent image showcase a physical gear lever, similar to traditional manual transmission vehicles. However, instead of controlling a mechanical gearbox, it seems to be connected to an electronic actuator system that simulates gear changes.
  • This system should create artificial resistance and shift point, offering the sensation of changing gears.
  • We aren’t sure wherther this system will also have a clutch pedal which will allow the driver to engage and disengage virtual gears.
