Honda Claims Their All Models Are E20 Compliant Since 2009

Honda Cars India has recently announced that all its models manufactured since January 1, 2009, are E20 compliant. This means that all current Honda models on sale, including the Amaze, City, City Hybrid and Elevate, are already compatible with a 20% ethanol-blended petrol mixture. Here’s what this compliance means.

What is E20 Fuel?

E20 fuel is actually a blend of 20% ethanol and 80% petrol, designed to reduce carbon emissions and dependence on fossil fuels while improving fuel efficiency. For those unaware, Ethanol is a renewable biofuel made from plant materials like corn, grains and sugarcane.

Starting April 1, 2025, the Indian government made all-powered mono-fuel and bi-fuel vehicles, including hybrids with positive ignition, to be certified for E20 fuel compliance as per existing emission regulations.

Benefits of E20 Fuel

1. Lower Carbon Emissions: It burns cleaner than regular petrol, thus reducing greenhouse gas emissions and overall carbon footprint.

2. Better Combustion: The E20 fuel has a higher octane rating, which improves combustion and reduces knocking in engines.

3. Less Dependence on Fossil Fuels: It reduces reliance on imported crude oil, enhancing energy security.

4. Boosts Farmers’ Income: It increases demand for ethanol-producing crops like maize and sugarcane.

Official Statement

Speaking on this matter, Mr. Kunal Behl, Vice President, Marketing & Sales, Honda Cars India Ltd. said, “At Honda Cars India, we are committed to driving sustainable mobility solutions and all our cars have been E20 material compatible since Jan 2009 enabling our customers to seamlessly adopt the greener E20 fuel without any modifications. The latest compliance certification for all our current models ahead of the pan India E20 fuel introduction aligns with the Government of India’s goal to implement greener fuels. As India moves towards a cleaner and more sustainable future, HCIL will continue to remain at the forefront.”

In other news, Honda is considering bringing the ZR-V hybrid SUV to our shores via the CBU route. It is expected to hit our shores by the end of this year or in early 2026 if get the green signal from management. However, we think the brand should consider offering a hybrid version of the Elevate in India instead of bringing the ZR-V to our land.
