Toyota To Launch A New Tata Safari-rivaling 7-Seater Mid-Size SUV

Toyota India is gearing up to expand its SUV lineup in India. Reports suggest that the Japanese carmaker is working on a new three-row SUV, which will go up against the likes of the Tata Safari, Mahindra XUV700, MG Hector Plus and Hyundai Alcazar. It is reportedly codenamed “340D.”

Toyota is expected to launch this SUV by 2026.

Upcoming Toyota SUV – What to expect?

While it’s too early to provide detailed information, it is anticipated that this upcoming SUV may share its platform with the Toyota Innova Hycross (TNGA-C platform), although it won’t be as long as the Hycross MPV.

Underneath the hood, the SUV is likely to be powered by Toyota’s 2-litre M20A-FXS strong hybrid mill, producing 184PS and 206Nm of torque.

Reports also suggest that Toyota will export the 340D to other right-hand-drive markets from India, with a production target of 60,000 units a year. It is expected to be produced at Toyota’s proposed third car plant in India, which is likely to be situated at Bidadi, Karnataka, alongside the existing manufacturing facilities. This new plant will have a production capacity ranging from 80,000 to 1.20 lakh units per annum, with the potential to scale up about 2 lakh units.
