MG Motor’s next offering for India will be a compact electric vehicle (EV) that will be called the ‘Comet EV’. The name derives inspiration from the iconic 1934 British aeroplane, which participated in the England-Australia MacRobertson Air Race.
The MG Comet EV is likely to be based on the Wuling Motor’s Air EV. Globally, the Air EV comes in two iterations: a 2-seater short-wheelbase (SWB) and a 4-seater long-wheelbase (LWB) version. The Indian-spec Comet EV should be based on its 3-door LWB iteration, which measures 2974mm in length, with a wheelbase of 2010mm, making it one of the smallest EVs in the Indian market.
Expected Design and Features
Expect the Comet EV to come with two battery pack choices, with their capacities lying between 20kWh to 25kWh. Internationally, the Wuling Air EV gets 17.3kWh and 26.7kWh battery pack options, paired with a 40PS electric motor and boasting a range of approximately 200km and 300km, respectively.
Design-wise, the MG Comet EV is expected to have a boxy design, with its front facia featuring a full-width light bar, along with a chrome strip connecting the wing mirrors.
As for features, the Comet EV should pack a large touchscreen infotainment system with connected car technology, a digital instrument cluster, automatic AC, a multi-function steering wheel, multi-regenerative braking, electronic stability control (ESC) and a rearview camera.
Expected Price
The MG Comet EV is likely to be launched later this year, with prices expected to start from below Rs 10 lakh (ex-showroom), making it India’s most affordable electric four-wheeler.
