Over 53 Lakh Vehicles Deregistered In Delhi In Last Four Years

Backed by an order from the National Green Tribunal to curb air pollution in the region, the Government of Delhi has deregistered over 53,38,045 end-of-life-cycle vehicles between 2018 to 2022, comprising 4,698,391 petrol, 415,362 diesel, and 41,311 CNG vehicles. Out of these 53 lakh units, over 50 lakh vehicles were delisted in 2022 itself. Such vehicles will no longer be able to ply on the roads.

For those not in know, the Delhi Government declares all diesel vehicles over 10 years old, as well as petrol and CNG vehicles over 15 years old, as end-of-life vehicles in the national capital region (NCR). Driving any of these vehicles in the national capital is therefore illegal.

Once the shelf life expires of the vehicles, it is mandatory to scrap them or owners can sell or re-register them in other states by taking a No objection certificate (NOC) from the transport department. They can also exchange their end-of-life vehicles at a dealership for a new vehicle or retrofit an electric powertrain through an authorised agency.
