The Global New Car Assessment Programme (NCAP) has released the crash test rating of Toyota Urban Cruiser, Hyundai Creta and i20. While we have already talked about the Korean offerings, the Japanese sub-4m SUV achieved an impressive 4 stars for adult occupant protection and 3 stars for child occupant protection.Â
Toyota Urban Cruiser is essentially a cross-badged version of the Maruti Vitara Brezza, which also scored 4 stars safety rating in its pre-facelift avatar.Â

Toyota Urban Cruiser achieves four stars for adult and three for child occupant protection
Adult Occupants’ Safety
- The Urban Cruiser got 13.52 points out of 17.
- The head and neck of both driver and co-passenger received ‘good’ protection.
- While protection to the driver’s chest was marked ‘adequate’, the same was labeled as ‘good’ for the co-passenger.
- Protection to the driver’s knees and passenger’s right side knee showed marginal protection as they could impact with dangerous structures behind the dashboard. On the other hand, the passenger’s left knee showed good protection.
- The driver’s tibias got adequate protection, while the co-driver’s tibias were convicted as good.
- Bodyshell of the SUV was rated as stable and it was capable of withstanding further loadings.
- The footwell area was also rated as stable.

Child Occupants’ Safety
- The Urban Cruiser got 3 stars for child occupant protection, scoring 36.68 points out of 49.Â
- This test was carried out with the standard 18 months and 36 months-old dummies placed in a child seat mounted on the ISOFIX mounts.
- The child seat for the 3-year-old dummy was facing forward (FWF) and prevented excess forward movement of the head. But still, there was low protection to the neck and adequate to the chest.
- On the other hand, the child seat for the 1.5-year-old dummy was facing rearward (RWF), and it provided ‘good’ protection to the head and chest.
