Tata Motors is all set to introduce the Tiago compact hatchback with a CNG powertrain in the near future (probably in November). If reports are to be believed, some Tata dealerships have already started accepting its unofficial bookings for a token amount of up to Rs 11,000.
Currently, the Tiago is available with a sole 1.2-litre 3-cylinder petrol engine that produces 86PS/113Nm and comes mated to a 5-speed manual and AMT transmission option. Expect the engine output to decrease by a significant margin with CNG, and it is likely to come only with the 5-speed manual gearbox.
While the carmaker is yet to reveal Tiago CNG's variant lineup, we reckon it to come with the entry-level and mid-spec variants of the standard Tiago. That said, it could get notable features like steel wheels with full covers, halogen headlamps, a 7-inch infotainment system with Apple Carplay and Android Auto, steering-mounted controls, manual air conditioning system, remote keyless entry, dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, corner stability control, rear parking sensors, and a tyre puncture repair kit.
Expect the Tiago CNG variants to command a premium of around Rs 60,000 over their corresponding standard trims. For reference, the Tata Tiago currently retails from Rs 4.99 – 7.04 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi) and rivals the Hyundai Santro, Datsun GO, Maruti Suzuki WagonR and Celerio. All of them except for the Datsun Go are already available with a factory-fitted CNG kit.
Post the launch of Tiago CNG, the brand could also introduce the Tigor and Altroz with the same alternative fuel option.
