Tata Punch Secured A Full 5-Star GNCAP Adult Safety Rating; Becomes The Safest Indian Car

Latest Update: Tata Punch has finally been launched, with prices ranging from Rs 5.49 lakh to Rs 9.09 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). Click here for more details.

Tata's soon-to-be-launched Punch micro-SUV has scored a perfect 5-star safety rating for adult occupants and 4-stars for child occupant protection in the recently conducted Global NCAP’s (New Car Assessment Program) crash tests under its #SaferCarsForIndia campaign. It was a voluntary crash test. That means, Tata Motors itself reached out to GNCAP with a request to submit a model for voluntary testing.

Tata Punch achieves 5 star rating for adult protection

The tested model was the entry-level variant of the Tata Punch that comes with basic safety features like driver and co-driver airbag, ABS with EBD, driver's seatbelt pretensioner, seat belt reminder, and ISOFIX child seat anchorages, etc.

During the front offset crash test (performed at a speed of 64kmph), the footwell area and body shell integrity were labeled as stable, and it was capable of withstanding further loadings. The protection offered to the driver and passenger’s head, neck, and chest was rated as good. The SUV also did well was in terms of femur and knee protection. However, the driver's tibias showed adequate protection while passenger tibias showed adequate and good protection. The car also passed a side impact test conducted at 50kmph.

For child occupants’ protection test, the Child Restraint Systems (CRSs) for the 3-year old and 1.5-years old child dummy were installed facing rearward with ISOFIX and support leg, thereby preventing excessive forward movement during the impact. This offered satisfying protection to the head and chest of both dummies.

All of the above helped the Tata Punch to score 16.45 points out of 17 for adult safety and 40.89 point out of 49 for child safety, exceeding the XUV300's crash-test score. However, the safety watchdog stated that the protection score of the Punch can be further improved by equipping the model with standard Electronic Stability Control (ESC), side head impact protection systems, and 3 point belts in all seating positions.
