Renewing Your 15-Year Old Vehicles Will Cost Eight Times More From April 2022

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has officially announced the increase in prices for the renewal of registration certificates (RC) of vehicles older than 15 years. As per the notification, the price for the renewal of a 15-year-old domestic car’s registration has risen to Rs 5,000, while it stands at Rs 1,000 for two-wheelers. On the other hand, the fee for RC renewal for imported bikes and cars will stand at Rs 10,000 and Rs 40,000, respectively.

These revised rates for re-registration are up to eight times higher than the ongoing charges. The ministry states that the rates have been revamped for pushing the customers towards cleaner and greener mobility. These new rates will be applicable from April 2022 onwards.

Recently, the Indian government has also rolled out the vehicle scrappage policy to phase out the old and polluting vehicles from the roads. Under this scheme, customers will also be entitled to get a waiver of RC charges for a new vehicle, purchased against the authority of the Certificate of Deposit (CoD) issued by a Registered Vehicle Scrapping Facility for a vehicle being scrapped. Besides, the government has also urged the manufactures to provide additional benefits to the customers. Click here for more details.

In the other updates, the ministry has recently introduced Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for the automobile industry to boost advanced automotive technology products, which will help to lower fossil fuel emissions. Besides, on the inauguration of National Highway projects in Ahmednagar (Maharashtra) on 2nd October 2021, Shri Nitin Gadkari, the union transport minister has also stated that all the vehicles in the country should run on 100% ethanol as it is a better and cheaper green fuel than petrol. This will also save the country's fuel.
